In 1980s, the turbo charged racing engines strengthened the capacity and marked an epoch in the history of F1. However, from the view point of safely, the racing was fought in 1989 only with the normally aspirated racers of 3500cc or less in compliance with the regulation. Ferrari has been one of the most distinguished teams among F1 constructors and it has progressed along with the history of grand Prix as the star at many exciting racings. At the last season, it has presented a revolutional machine F1 89 loaded with newly designed V12-cylindered engine. The maximum feature of the machine is the electromagneticsemi-automatic transmission. Driver conducts the shift up and down by the operation of a pair of right and left switches installed behind the steering wheel. This shift system has a smaller loss time than the conventional shift operation and, since the steering is controlled by both hands, the cornering can be performed very smoothly. The body, which is made of the carbon fibre, has a flat and sharp nose and forms a unique ontline because of the longitudinal radiator air intake.
