The HUEY is one of the world's most recognized helicopters. In Vietnam primary missions included general support, air assault, cargo transport, Medevac and ground attack. The UH-1C HUEY Gunship represents the third generation of Bell's Iroquois series. Although it followed the D, E and F variants into production, it is a direct descendent of the UH-1B. Deliveries began in September 1965, with 749 produced. Created as an interim gunship during the development of the AH-1 Cobra, the UH-1C performed a host of invaluable duties under fire. In late 1965 the HUEY gunships took on more advanced rocket and grenade launchers and the "Hog" and "Heavy Hog" were born. The "Hog" nickname came about because of their frequent reluctance to become airborne and their ungainly appearance. "Charley" Model C HUEYS were often mistaken for the UH-1B. The UH-1C saw combat through to the close of the Vietnam conflict. Deadly to the enemy it was essential to U.S. forces as a most formidable gunship.
