[actual car]
- JR East introduced the DD18, which was revised to 1435 mm, by combining the DD51 diesel locomotive, which was surplus at the time for snow removal in the new direct section, and the Russell head for double tracks of the DE15 type.
- Initially, two units were remodeled in 1991 for the Yamagata Shinkansen, and a third unit was newly remodeled in 1996 when the Akita Shinkansen opened, supporting stable operation in winter.
- Unit 3 was retired in 2007 due to the introduction of a successor snow removal machine.
