- For Series 159, 16 trains were produced on the school excursion train for the Nakagyo district of Aichi, Gifu and Mie 3 prefectures that appeared in March 1961 (1961).
- Unlike the 155 series, the structure is similar to 153 series, the apparent difference is that the ventilator on the roof is push-in type, the seat is a two-row four-seat box seat on both sides.
- From this time around Showa 50 (1975) the operation was shared with the 153/165 series, and some of them were commercialized as Shonan color.
