- The No. 5 Seikan Maru class was based on the No. 4 Seikan Maru, which was under construction at the start of the Pacific War. After that, eight ships of the same type, including the No. 5 Seikan Maru, were built up to the No. 12 Seikan Maru.

- Scheduled for completion in 1944, the construction period was 116 days, setting a record for the shortest construction period for a W-type ship, and was completed within 1943.
- The captain and chief engineer had their own private rooms on the promenade deck.
- Other high-ranking sailors used bunks in the large room on the promenade deck.
- The helmsman, other deckhands, engine and clerks had their own large rooms on the bridge deck and used bunk bunks.
- However, since the naval patrol officer's room with two bunks was installed on the bridge deck without expanding the deckhouse, the ordinary sailor's dining room disappeared.
- The style of this large room with two bunks was followed up to the 11th Seikanmaru.
- After this ship, the superheater of the boiler was omitted, and it became difficult to operate for 4 hours and 30 minutes due to the use of saturated steam.
- On the second deck below the vehicle deck, the steel deck was abolished in both the first hold and the axle room, leaving only beams.
- At the end of the war, it was wrecked and stranded, but was repaired and put into service again.
