- Joint development by Lancia, tuner Abarth, and design studio Pininfarina was carried out under the abbreviation [037].
- They soon realized that for competition use, four-wheel drive would be inevitable.
- At Abarth, engineers focused on the engine and created a power source that did not skimp on power.
- With the help of Formula 1 technology, Abarth designed a high-revving 1759cc four-cylinder engine, officially rated at 450 horsepower, but rumor has it as high as 550 horsepower.

- The newly built rally car was based on the production model [Delta], but in the end only a few parts of the exterior were reminiscent of that production model.
- With four drive wheels, the project name was changed to [037/04], and it became possible to send powerful engine power to the road under the direction of an experienced driver.
