- The IAR-81 was a dive bomber developed by the Romanian IAR Brasov factory and used by the Romanian Air Force.
- Later variants lost the dive bombing equipment and were redesigned as anti-bomber fighter interceptors. Only used by the Romanian Air Force.
- In 1943, the IAR-81C, the final model of the IAR-80 and 81 series, made its first flight.
- The IAR-81C, which was the final fighter model in the IAR-80 and 81 series, was designed, along with the IAR-80C, as an anti-bomber fighter interceptor equipped with a 20mm cannon.
- With the removal of the unnecessary bombardment system, the IAR-81C's maximum speed was increased to 514 km/h.
- This aircraft was nearly identical to the IAR-80C, except that it was fitted with a more powerful German Mauser MG 151/20 cannon instead of the IAR-80C's Ikaria MG-FF/M cannon.
- By the summer of 1943, the IAR-80s and IAR-81s were withdrawn from all units on the Eastern Front and were assigned to the air defense of Romania.
