- The FV4101 Charioteer is a tank destroyer developed by the British.
- In the early 1950s, the British Army conceived a plan to provide additional firepower to the Royal Armoured Corps' troops by mounting an Ordnance QF 20-pounder gun in a new lightweight turret on an existing tank chassis.
Based on this concept, a provisional new vehicle was developed based on the Cromwell chassis, with the hull machine gun removed, and a new turret mounting a 20-pounder gun. It was completed in 1952 and given the model number FV4101.
- A total of 442 locomotives were converted from Cromwell, of which 189 were sold abroad.
- As production and deployment of the Centurion got underway, contrary to initial plans, from 1953 onwards the Centurion was deployed exclusively to the British Volunteer Forces, a British reserve force.
- Their period of service with the Volunteer Defence Forces was short, and they were withdrawn from deployment units in 1956 and gradually sold to foreign countries, where they were equipped and used in Austria, Finland, Jordan and Lebanon.
- There are four types of Charioteer, Mk.6/7/7w/8, based on the type of Cromwell cruiser tank on which it was based, and two subtypes, Model A/B, based on whether or not the 20-pounder gun had a smoke extractor.
