FFM-1 [Mogami] and FFM-2 [Kumano] were approved for construction under the fiscal year 2018 budget, and are state-of-the-art escort ships specialized for minesweeping missions against advanced mines, equipped with mine countermeasure sonar, autonomous underwater mine detectors (UUVs), and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) for mine clearance.
Consideration has also been given to improving stealth, and most of the equipment is installed on the inside of the sloping ships' sides, and the ship's appearance is different from that of previous escort ships, with its distinctive unicorn-shaped composite antenna and pyramidal mast equipped with multi-function radars on all four sides.
FFM-1 [Mogami] was commissioned in April 2022, and FFM-2 [Kumano] was commissioned in March of the same year.
