The Type 054B was developed from the Type 054/054A as a successor to the Type 054, but the hull is larger than the Type 054/054A, and is closer in size to the Type 052B destroyer.
Additionally, the masts and bridge have been redesigned to reduce the ship's radar cross section.
The ship is equipped with a dual-plane phased array radar on its bridge.
