Hitoyoshi's Degoichi attempts to cross Yatake
The Hisatsu Line connects Yatsushiro in Kumamoto Prefecture and Hayato in Kagoshima Prefecture.
It was once part of the Kagoshima Main Line, Kyushu's main artery.
The Hisatsu Line is divided into two sections, the Yatsushiro side and the Hayato side, separated by Hitoyoshi, and is called the River Line and the Mountain Line, respectively. The section between Hitoyoshi and Yoshimatsu in particular offers views of the Kunimi Mountains, which were counted among the three great train routes of the Japanese National Railways. However, even though loop lines and switchbacks were installed to overcome the mountainous terrain, it was still a difficult section with a series of steep gradients and tunnels.
For this reason, the D51 type locomotives operated at Hitoyoshi Locomotive Depot on the Hisatsu Line were equipped with heavy oil combustion tanks and smoke collectors, and were used in push-pull multiple-headed operation to handle freight trains and mixed trains passing through the same section.
The models were made using No. 170, No. 545, and No. 1151 from the D51 type locomotives in the Hitoyoshi district as prototypes.
As much detail as possible is included to accurately recreate the differences in form of each machine.
