[Actual vehicle guide]
- About the Hokutosei and JR East specifications
The Hokutosei is a sleeper express train that ran between Ueno and Sapporo after the opening of the Seikan Tunnel in 1988, and boasted luxurious facilities such as private sleeping compartments and lounge cars.
It served as a train connecting Tokyo and Hokkaido for many years, but sadly came to an end in 2015 with the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
Formations made up entirely of JR East vehicles were in service on Hokutosei Nos. 3 to 6 when it ran three round trips, and Nos. 3, 4, 81, and 82 when it ran two round trips. In addition, they could be seen on the special Hokutosei trains that ran from the end of regular service in March 2015 until August.
- About Elm
The sleeper express "Elm" has been running on the same route between Ueno and Sapporo since July 1989, mainly during peak seasons, as a complement to the "Hokutosei" service.
The train consisted of only open-type B-class sleeping cars shared with the Hokutosei, and initially used modified 24 series 24-0 cars, but in the 2000s the train consisted mainly of 24 series 25 cars, and continued to operate until 2006.
