[Actual vehicle introduction]
The Kiha 20 series is a general-purpose diesel railcar that has a larger body and improved comfort as an improved version of the Kiha 10 series, which was introduced nationwide to improve service through diesel railcars.
The Kiha 20 series has been manufactured since 1957, and there are many variations, such as the number of cabs, cold climate type, extremely cold climate type, and combined mail and baggage cars, but the Kiha 52 type was manufactured with two engines and two cabs to increase power output for use on steeply sloping lines.
The body of the vehicle has been extended to 21 meters to accommodate the running equipment.
The Kiha 52 series was highly versatile and was manufactured for the longest period of time among the Kiha 20 series, until 1966.
The Kiha 52 Series 0 series was manufactured from 1958 onwards, and is equipped with a DMH17C vertical engine. The exhaust pipe passes through the centre of the car, so the window pillars in that area are wider.
The Kiha 52 series 100 was an improved version manufactured from 1962, and the adoption of the DMH17H horizontal engine improved ease of inspection and maintenance.
Additionally, the exhaust pipes have been moved to the front and rear of the vehicle, and the passenger compartment windows are evenly spaced.
Many Kiha 52 series locomotives were in operation in Kyushu, which has many mountain routes.
From the end of the JNR era, the ivory base and the fascia and waistboards were repainted in Kyushu colors with blue stripes.
The 0 series remained non-air-conditioned and were in service until around 1993, while some of the 100 series were converted to air conditioning and fitted with skirts and were in service until the early 2000s.

The position of the side lights has been corrected to match the real thing, making it look more realistic.
The coupler has been changed to the same shape as the H-7:ED60 (released in 2015) for versatility.

The 100 series has the same layout of passenger compartment windows. The upper front is painted gray. Two shield beams, warm climate typhoon. The front through door has the original window.
The appearance after 1988, when the affiliation marking became Kagoshima Diesel Railcar Depot [Kakako], inspection marking [61-9 Kagoshima Railway Section]. Before the installation of non-air-conditioned and skirts.
