The first prototype, which made its maiden flight in October 1938, was generally satisfactory and was officially adopted in July 1940. A very small number of these aircraft also participated in daytime interception during the Battle of Britain.
Named after the company's Beaufort torpedo bomber and fighter, this aircraft was initially developed as a twin-engine heavy daytime fighter capable of long-range flight. However, due to its ample payload capacity, it was used for a wide variety of missions, including as a radar-equipped night fighter and fighter-torpedo bomber.
