USS Michael Murphy is a guided-missile destroyer of the United States Navy, and the 62nd ship of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers.
The ship is named after Lieutenant Commander Michael Patrick Murphy of the Navy SEALs, who was killed in action during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in June 2005 and was awarded the Medal of Honor.
The ship was laid down in June 2010, named and launched on May 7, 2011, which is Lieutenant Commander Murphy's birthday, by his mother, Maureen Murphy, and commissioned in October 2012.
In February 2014, when the Canadian Navy supply ship USS Protecteur caught fire in the waters northeast of Pearl Harbor, the USS Michael Murphy was dispatched to provide assistance.
In recognition of this contribution, he was awarded a Canadian military commendation in May 2015.
In April 2026, she participated in mine-clearing operations in the Arabian Gulf alongside the destroyer Frank E. Petersen, which had been laid by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
USS Michael Murphy is a highly versatile Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer equipped with an advanced Aegis system, capable of handling a variety of operations including air defense, anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship, and land attack. It is also a Flight IIA ship with improved helicopter operational capabilities.
Flight IIA ships, including the Michael Murphy, are the type ships for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's Atago-class and Maya-class destroyers.
