In the mid-1980s, there was a steadily growing demand for amphibious vehicles designed for pipeline monitoring.
In response, Rheinauer Maschinen- und Armaturenbau GmbH developed the RMA Amphi Ranger 2800 SR model.
The first three letters of the model name represent the company name, and the number 2800 represents the displacement of the Ford V6 engine installed (initially producing 135 horsepower).
The two letters [SR] in the model name stood for [Seawater Resistant].
The internal components of this vehicle had to be equally adaptable to both of two completely different driving conditions.
Therefore, the powertrain, which included a 4-speed or 5-speed manual transmission, was equipped with a 2-speed transfer case.
It could switch between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, reaching a top speed of approximately 140 km/h on asphalt and capable of crawling at a minimum speed of 3.5 km/h.
On the water, it recorded a top speed of 10 knots (approximately 18 km/h).
Approximately 70 units were produced between 1985 and 1995.
The vast majority of these were likely used for pipeline construction and monitoring around the world, with very few orders coming from individuals.
Considering that the base price at the time was 100,000 German marks, some people who were considering purchasing it may have reconsidered and decided against buying it, thinking that it would be more worthwhile to invest that amount in a regular passenger car.
