At the time, car transport vehicles were often specialized for specific manufacturers' vehicle models, which led to inefficiencies such as empty vehicles on the return journey.
To address these issues, the Ku5000 series was introduced in 1966 as a versatile vehicle that could be used without being limited to specific types of trains.
By 1973, a total of 932 units had been manufactured, including prototypes, and it became known as the most successful and masterpiece locomotive in the history of Japanese National Railways freight services.
The vehicle's body is characterized by its vibrant vermilion color (No. 3), and it employs a sturdy, lattice-like frame structure that allows for the loading of automobiles in two tiers, upper and lower.
With a long body of approximately 20.5m in length, it can carry 8 regular passenger cars or up to 12 kei cars (mini vehicles).
Loading and unloading was done using a self-propelled system, where vehicles would move under their own power using platforms stretched across the ends of freight cars to load the cargo.
