- On the Keihanshin Local Line (Tokaido/Sanyo Main Line), 103 series and old model trains have been in operation since 1969, but in 1972, it was decided to increase the number of new rapid trains, and the performance of the old model trains was shared at that time. Since it interfered with the high-speed operation of the new rapid service, it was completely replaced with the 103 series, and some specifications were changed and classified as the first improved vehicle.
-The side windows were made into unit sashes in accordance with the prototype air-conditioned car that appeared on the Yamanote Line in 1970, and the headlights were made into two-light sealed beams, but the cooling device was not installed. .
- After that, air conditioning remodeling, life extension work, etc. were performed, but it was retired in 1994 due to the introduction of the successor series 201, 205, and 207, and was transferred to another line section.
