──Honshu Link Express Shiokaze! 8000 Series Train

[Actual vehicle introduction]
- The JR Shikoku 8000 series, with prototypes appearing in 1992 and mass-produced cars appearing the following year, is a vehicle that is mainly used on the limited express train "Shiokaze" between Okayama and Matsuyama, and the limited express train "Ishizuchi" between Takamatsu and Matsuyama.
- The car bodies are made of lightweight stainless steel, and because Shiokaze and Ishizuchi need to be split and merged along the way, there are streamlined non-through leading cars and gabled through leading cars.
- A controlled pendulum system is adopted to allow the train to go around curves at high speeds, and a cooler is installed under the floor to ensure a low center of gravity.
- Another major feature is that the pantograph is mounted on a base that is connected to the bogie by a wire, preventing it from coming off the tracks when the car body is tilted.
- Six 5-car and six 3-car sets were manufactured.
- Renovation work on the interior and exterior began in 2004, with the replacement of seats in Green Cars and Reserved Seat Cars, the installation of smoking rooms (which were removed from service in 2011), and the complete conversion of toilets to Western-style toilets. In addition, the exterior of the train was given a fresh, distinctive design with vertical slits decorated around the passenger doors of each car in different colors based on the seating arrangement, and this resulted in the train receiving the Good Design Award in 2005.
- In 2010, the pantographs of the 8500 series were removed to accommodate the shortening of train formations to three cars.
- In 2014, the position of the Green Car was changed to be consistent with that of the 2000 Series diesel cars, and the 8000 Series (half Green Car) was once again the No. 1 car for the first time since 1998.
- One three-car train was retired in 2018.
- The second renewal and remodeling is scheduled to begin in 2023, and the 8000 series train, which has served as the face of the connection between Okayama and Shikoku for over 30 years, is entering a new era of transformation, and future developments are attracting attention.
