--The EF81-400 was introduced by modifying the 14 cars of the EF81-0 type to replace the EF30 type used in the Kanmon tunnel.

--The cars belonging to JR Kyushu have been scrapped due to the reduction of sleeper limited express trains, and after the total abolition of sleeper limited express trains on Kyushu Island, only two cars were enrolled, but all were scrapped in 2010.
--Since the car belonging to JR Kyushu did not have an operation that uses the double-headed integrated control, a part of the jumper plug that was added at the time of the 400th generation was removed.
