――The 3M is an advanced version of the M-4, which first flew in 1953.
--The M-4 is equipped with four Mikulin AM-3 turbojet engines at the base of the main wing, a tandem landing gear with main landing gears at the front and rear of the fuselage, and auxiliary wheels at the tips of the left and right main wings, and can carry a payload of up to 24 tons. Although it was a bomber developed using such innovative technology, it had the problem that its cruising range was too short for a strategic bomber.
--The 3M developed by Myasichev has been changed to the Dobrinin RD-7 engine, which is more fuel efficient than the M-4, and the fuselage has been redesigned to reduce the weight of the fuselage and at the same time increase the size of the main wings. Also, by installing an aerial refueling probe on the nose, it has become possible to greatly extend the cruising range.
