――The 50 series general passenger car was manufactured from 1977 to 1982 in order to replace a large amount of old old passenger cars that remained in various parts of Japan and to utilize the locomotives that had been idle.
――Since the manufacturing cost is cheaper than trains and diesel cars while having modern car interiors and automatic doors and other safety equipment similar to the Kiha 40 series manufactured at the same time, 952 passenger cars alone are manufactured. And placed all over Japan.
――The car body was painted in red and was nicknamed [Red Train].
――It was mainly used during rush hours when it was necessary to deal with long formations.
--The 50 series that was transferred to JR Kyushu was equipped with a cooling system from 1991 to 1994 and was classified into the 1000th generation.
――In this modification, the window on one side was filled in one place, and the appearance was changed by installing an outdoor unit and a power generation device under the floor.
