- The 103 series is a general-purpose commuter train designed with an emphasis on economy, based on the 101 series, JNR's first new performance commuter train.
- More than 3,400 cars have been manufactured since 1963, and they have been used as a star of commuter transportation mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Kinki area.
- After the division and privatization of the National Railways, it was taken over by each JR company except JR Hokkaido and JR Shikoku, and each of them has been active for half a century, but it is finally coming to an end.
