[About the actual car]
- The Renault B1 is a heavy tank developed and deployed by France before World War II. It is also called the Char B1, which is the French word for tank.
- It was standardized in 1934 and production began in 1935.
- The 30-ton body was equipped with a 17-caliber 75 mm tank gun, and the swivel turret was equipped with a 30-caliber 47 mm tank gun and a coaxial 7.5 mm machine gun as a secondary gun. Development of the improved version, the B1 bis, began in 1930.
- The engine was replaced with a Renault Naeder-FIEUX inline 6-cylinder, increasing power from 180 horsepower to 250 horsepower, and the turret was changed to the new APX-4 type.
- The main gun mounted on the hull remained the same, a 75mm 17-caliber gun, but the new turret received a new 47mm 32-caliber gun.
- Production of the B1 bis began in 1937, and by the time of the German invasion of France in 1940, about 400 vehicles had been completed. They were deployed to armored divisions to fight against the German forces.
- Their heavy armor often caused trouble for the German army, and the German army captured many of them after their victory in the Battle of France.
