Buran is a winged spaceplane developed by the former Soviet Union in the 1980s, and "Buran" means "snowstorm" in Russian, specifically "steppe blizzard."
Energia was a Soviet heavy rocket with four liquid-fueled booster rockets and four central single-chamber engines.
Although Buran is similar in design to the American Space Shuttle, its launch system is completely different.
Buran does not have a main engine; Energia, developed at the same time, serves as the payload to carry it into orbit.
Since Buran is not equipped with a main engine (the return retrorockets are mounted at the rear of the aircraft), the lack of a main engine and fuel tanks means the Orbiter is lighter in weight and can carry a larger load, and it also has the advantage of being able to slow down during landing, allowing for safer re-entry into the atmosphere.
