In this installment of the Bus Collection series, we will be introducing the Nara Kotsu Yagi-Shingu Line, famous for being the longest bus route in Japan that does not use the expressway across the Kii Peninsula, and the Totsukawa Village Bus in Totsukawa Village, Nara Prefecture, which is said to be the largest village in Japan in terms of area.
Nara Kotsu's Yagi-Shingu Line is a long route that stretches 169.9 km from Yamato-Yagi Station on the Kintetsu Line in Nara Prefecture to Shingu Station on the Kisei Main Line in Wakayama Prefecture, with 168 bus stops and a travel time of approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes.
Along the line there are tourist spots such as the Tanise Suspension Bridge in Uenoji, Totsukawa Onsen, Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, Yunomine Onsen, Watase Onsen, and Kawayu Onsen, and in recent years the area has become popular with foreign tourists visiting Japan.
The Totsukawa Village Bus in Totsukawa Village along the Yagi-Shingu Line began operating in 1975 as a school bus following the consolidation and closure of public schools, and was Japan's first village-run community bus.
Currently, Nara Kotsu Totsukawa Office is in charge of operation and management of the buses. There are 15 routes in total. Among them, the Nishikawa Line, which runs along National Route 425, a long stretch of narrow road, ends at Sako Nishikawa turnaround point, and is popular among bus enthusiasts.
