[About the actual machine]
The JAS39 Gripen is a multi-role fighter aircraft operated by the Swedish Air Force since 1996.
Development was started in 1980 by Saab as a successor to the Saab 37 Viggen.
It featured the same canard-equipped delta wing design as the successful Viggen that had preceded it.
The aircraft is equipped with one RM12 turbofan engine, an improved version of the American General Electric F404-GE400 engine by Volvo Aero of Sweden.
It is equipped with one BK-27 27mm cannon as fixed armament, and can also be fitted with various missiles.
The prototype's first flight was in 1988.
Deployment of the unit began in 1996.
Improvements have been made over time, and various types have been produced, but the Gripen, which is small, lightweight and easy to maintain, is adopted not only by Sweden, but also by air forces around the world, including Hungary and the Czech Republic.
