The Kiha 40 series was a general-purpose diesel car developed by the Japanese National Railways and introduced in 1977 as a successor to the Kiha 10 series, which was becoming obsolete at the time.
The vehicles, which can be operated as a single unit, have both a driver's cab on one side and a driver's cab on both sides. Various series divisions have been created, including specifications to suit the climate of each region and the availability of toilets.
The Kiha 40 series 500s were vehicles with dual driver's cabs for cold climates, and were mainly deployed in the Tohoku region. At first glance, they appear similar to the Kiha 40 series 2000s for warmer climates, but the unit sash windows on the sides are upper drop/lower rise type, and are slightly larger vertically than the 2000s. The four inner corners of the sash frame of the 2000s are nearly right angles, whereas the 500s are rounded.
When first introduced, the exterior was a single vermilion No. 5 color known as the "Capital Region Color," but from the later period of the JNR to the time of the JR system, cars with different paint schemes known as "Regional Colors" appeared in various places. For the northern Tohoku region, centered around Morioka, the Morioka color with a white background and red stripes appeared, while for the Iiyama Line in the Shinetsu region, cars with a white and blue background with diagonal orange stripes and a logo of the French words "VOITURE AMITIE" (Train of Friendship) appeared, and the color variations of the Kiha 40 series expanded.

The vertical dimensions are slightly larger than those of the 2000 series, and the side windows and side glass with rounded corners on the inside of the sash frame are newly reproduced.

The car body is slightly larger in vertical dimension than the 2000 series, and has a unit sash window with rounded corners on the inside of the frame.

The bogie is equipped with DT44A and TR227A.
The underfloor area reproduces the complex structure unique to diesel cars, including the DMF15 engine and various other equipment.
The jumper plug on the front can be installed with either a hose or a plug cover.
The front display is interchangeable and comes with printed parts [Regular (navy blue) / Rapid]
Clear parts are attached to the side indicator lights

Car number is selectable and a transfer sheet is included
Head and tail lights and front display have ON/OFF switches
The headlights are illuminated by warm white LEDs, the taillights by red LEDs, and the front display by white LEDs.
Equipped with a driver's cab interior light that lights up when rearward or between coupling surfaces
The driver's cab interior light can be turned on by switching the switch, even when the head and tail lights and front display are off when the driver's cab is in the middle.
Closely coupled TN coupler is standard equipment
Minimum radius R490 can be passed (excluding S-shaped alignments)
