[Actual vehicle introduction]
The Shinetsu Main Line was a trunk line that ran from Takasaki to Niigata Station via Nagano and Naoetsu, and, along with the Joetsu Line, was an important route connecting the Tokyo metropolitan area, the Pacific coast, and the Sea of Japan coast.
However, there is a difficult section along the way, known as Usui Pass, between Yokokawa and Karuizawa, with a steepest gradient of 66.7‰. Previously, this section was operated using the Abt system, but there were problems such as low operating speeds, single track, and restrictions on transport weight. These issues were resolved by building a new double-track line and using adhesion operation with new locomotives.
In March 1963, the EF62 electric locomotive was developed for the Shinetsu Main Line, including the Usui Pass section, along with the EF63, a locomotive exclusively used for pushing trains on the Usui Pass section.
To ensure climbing and high-speed performance, the locomotive is equipped with various devices, while in order to reduce axle weight, it has a distinctive appearance thanks to the adoption of three-axle bogies, which are unparalleled among other new series F-class locomotives, an FRP roof that allows for lighting while keeping weight down, and electric heating.
The car bodies are different between No. 1 (prototype), No. 2 to No. 24 (early model), and No. 25 to No. 54 (late model), and there are differences in the shape of the side louvers and the side windows of the driver's cab.
Initially, it was painted in grape color No. 2, but around 1965 it was repainted in a new blue body with a cream front.

A variation based on A0970 (released December 2004)
The first model, characterized by its side louver shape, is commercialized in its original grape-colored appearance.
The front guide handrail and release lever are separate parts for a three-dimensional reproduction
This model reproduces the appearance before the box (horizontal light radio antenna) was installed under the driver's cab window on the second side. The height of the section nameplate holder is also different from that of A0974 and EF62-11, which reproduce the appearance after the antenna was installed.
The whistle and signal flare on the roof are separate parts. The lightning arrester is installed without a cover.
The monitor, pantograph stand, FRP parts, and other roof parts are painted in accordance with the actual vehicle.
Motor included. Headlights are on (no off switch). Taillights are not on.
