In late 1943, the Soviet army succeeded in recapturing half of the territory it had previously lost on the Eastern Front through the battles of Stalingrad, Operation Don, Kursk, and the second recapture of Kharkov, pushing the front line back into central Ukraine along the Dnieper River.
The next major Soviet offensive in the south began in late December 1943.
In response to this Soviet offensive, the Germans temporarily deployed two armored battalions in January 1944, consisting solely of Tiger and Panther tanks.
Under the command of Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Franz Beke, Doctor of Dentistry, the regiment that bears his name fought against the Soviet army in two operations that were later considered some of the bloodiest in the history of the Eastern Front.
The Beke Heavy Tank Regiment was only active for a little over a month, taking part in just two operations in January and February 1944, but is said to have destroyed over 500 Soviet tanks and self-propelled guns in just 24 days of fighting.
