Introducing a completely new 1/72 scale injection molded plastic kit of the Project Pluto supersonic low-altitude missile from Micromill of Ukraine.
Project Pluto was a US project to develop a nuclear-powered, Mach 3 cruise missile equipped with a ramjet engine.
Two test engines were built for this project and tested at the U.S. Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site in 1961 and 1964.
Under this plan, the missile would be launched from the ground using rocket boosters, accelerated to the operating speed of the ramjet engine, and then the nuclear reactor would be activated once it reached cruising altitude.
The use of a nuclear reactor would give the missile virtually unlimited range, allowing it to lie dormant over international waters until ordered to strike a target within the Soviet Union.
The proposal also considered using the missile as an unmanned bomber, since it could be equipped with multiple nuclear warheads to attack multiple targets.
However, this plan pointed out that the missile could cause secondary damage due to radiation contained in the exhaust during flight, and it was predicted that when a missile with a length of more than 20 meters flew at low altitude at Mach 3, the generated shock wave would cause devastating damage to the ground.
This plan also had many problems, such as the possibility of the missile crashing due to fuel shortage or malfunction, resulting in radioactive contamination of the impact site.
As a result, the US Department of Defense abandoned the test flights, and the plan was cancelled when it was demonstrated that an intercontinental ballistic missile could be easily developed during the same period.
The kit comes with an in-flight display base and one US Air Force decal.
When completed, the total length will be approximately 329mm and the total width will be approximately 53mm.
