The AB40/41 was a wheeled armoured car mass-produced in Italy during World War II.
The Italian Army continued to use the IZ armored car, which had been standardized in 1915, into the 1930s, but in 1938 plans were made to develop a new wheeled armored car.
A prototype vehicle called ABM1 was completed in 1939, and after further testing and refinement it was adopted as the AB40, with mass production beginning in 1940.
The AB40 had a hull with sloped armor designed for bullet-proofing, a four-wheel drive independent suspension, and a four-wheel steering undercarriage, which gave it excellent off-road performance, and the spare tires recessed into the center of the left and right sides of the vehicle prevented the center of the vehicle from touching the ground on rough, uneven terrain.
Initially produced vehicles were only equipped with two Breda M38 8mm machine guns in the turret, but from 1941 production switched to a version equipped with a Breda M35 20mm 65-caliber cannon in the same turret as the L6/40 light tank. In 1942, the vehicle was given the nickname AB41 and became the main mass-produced model.
The AB40/41 was deployed to cavalry units, motorized infantry units, armored division reconnaissance units, and military police units and was used on all fronts throughout World War II.
