Product Description
The Mobile Bay is a guided-missile cruiser of the United States Navy, and the seventh ship of the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers.
The ship's name is derived from the Battle of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War.
The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers were based on the Spruance-class destroyers, with the design modified to accommodate the Aegis system. Construction of the first operational Aegis destroyers began in 1978, and 27 ships of this class entered service between 1983 and 1994.
Along with the Cleveland-class light cruisers, it boasts the largest number of constructions among U.S. Navy cruisers, and with the retirement of the California-class nuclear-powered guided-missile cruisers in 1999, it is the only cruiser the U.S. Navy currently possesses.
Compared to the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, which began construction somewhat later, this class of ship features a more sophisticated combat command center, a larger payload of naval guns and missiles, and a larger hull resulting in better habitability and a longer cruising range. Furthermore, because the captain holds the rank of captain, this class of ship often serves as the anti-aircraft command ship in carrier strike groups.
The hull of this class, which follows the basic design of the Spruance class, is based on a wave-breaking deck type with two full-length flight decks and a long forecastle type with a cutout at the aft end. However, in order to accommodate the increased displacement due to the installation of the Aegis system, the bulkhead deck was modified, and the internal compartments were changed accordingly.
Furthermore, the superstructure has been enlarged to accommodate the antenna for the AN/SPY-1 multi-function radar.
The main engines retained the COGAG system used in the Spruance-class, which employed four LM2500 gas turbine engines to drive two variable-pitch propeller shafts. However, with the addition of the Aegis system, the number of gas turbine generators was increased to four, strengthening the power supply.
