The JR West KiHa 189 series is a newly built limited express diesel railcar designed to replace the 181 series used for the "Hamakaze" limited express service.
The basic configuration is a three-car train, but it can be flexibly adjusted by coupling additional cars when passenger numbers increase.
Since 2024, the "Hanaakari" has been introduced as a sightseeing limited express train, a modified version of the KiHa 189 series. Starting with a special train for the Hokuriku Destination Campaign coinciding with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, it has been active not only in the Hokuriku region but also in various parts of JR West's jurisdiction, including the Hiroshima and Kansai areas.
