The P-1 patrol aircraft was developed as a successor to the conventional propeller-driven anti-submarine patrol aircraft P-3C and entered service in 2013. It is the world's first operational aircraft to adopt a fly-by-light control system, and incorporates thorough countermeasures against electromagnetic interference. It is also equipped with a newly developed acoustic and radar system that improves its search and detection capabilities against submarines and suspicious vessels.
The first prototype (XP-1) made its maiden flight in September 2007.
