Product Description
The last type of the Type B cruiser submarine, which was the mainstay of the Imperial Japanese Navy's large submarines, was the Type B Kai 2 (I-54 type), with three vessels, I-54, I-56, and I-58, commissioned in 1944.
Like the Type B Kai 1, which was based on the Type B, this class was modified to accommodate wartime rapid construction. As a result of using the simpler-to-manufacture Type 22 engine, the speed decreased by nearly 5 knots, but the fuel capacity was increased, and the cruising range was increased by 1.5 times.
Additionally, the number of torpedoes carried was increased by two to 19, and special paint that absorbs sonar waves was applied to the bridge and other parts of the ship.
Completed in September 1944, the I-58 was initially equipped with an aircraft armament consisting of a hangar and catapult at the front and four Kaiten suicide torpedoes at the rear. Later, the aircraft armament was removed and six Kaiten torpedoes were installed.
