Flak: "Tank-killer" Antiaircraft artillery?
Hi, I'm Tomeko.
Well, today's theme is so difficult and profound.

What is "Flak"?
The Flak is the German antiaircraft artillery during World War II.
The aim of antiaircraft artillery is literally to shoot down enemy aircrafts.

Among several types of Flak, "Acht-Acht (88 caliber)" is the most famous.
Due to its long-range and accurate rapid-fire cannon, the pilots of the Allied Powers were afraid of this antiaircraft artillery.

But the funny thing is that the Flak was used not only as an antiaircraft cannon but also as an "antitank" cannon.

The Flak was made in 1928.
Since Germany was a defeated country of World War I, its weapon development was strictly restricted by the Versailles Treaty in 1919.
But there always are fast workers everywhere.
The German weapon manufacturer "Krupp" started to make antiaircraft cannons, which was of course banned, and then the early model "Flak 18" was completed.
The model number "18" indicates the year of manufacture, but actually it's a plastic excuse which means;
"Flak 18 was developed in 1918, that is, before the Versailles Treaty in 1919. So it's not a treaty violation!"

Well, let's get back to the point that the Flak was used as an antitank cannon.

Since the Flak was originally developed to shoot down high-speed flying targets, its bullet speed was so high that it had strong penetrating power.
Although I'm not sure whether it was intended to use Flak as an antitank cannon, Flak had a wide variety of bullets such as armor-piercing ammunitions.
So Flak could penetrate heavy armor of enemy tanks.
It is well known that Flack caused heavy damage to armored tanks of the Allied Powers such as Matilda and B1.

Anyway, to make a long story short;
Although Flak was originally developed as antiaircraft artillery, since its performance was so excellent, it was used to destroy enemy tanks in passing.

Actually, I haven't heard about any defects of this Flak series.
I think this proves the superiority of Flak as a weapon.

See you again next time!
