What do you do first when you catch a train ? You check its distination, don't you ? It must be a big trouble if you catch a wrong train, right ? In the railway world, the device which shows distination is called Houkou Maku, which literaly means the cloth showing direction, or Sabo, which is abbreviation of Side Board.

Actually the device can show a distination with it rolling up and down the cloth. When a train arrive at its distination, the device rolls up or down the cloth and stop at the next disitination. When you come across the device rolling up or down the cloth, just stare at it and then try to find station names which should not be listed on its line or imagine how the train take routes. That must be a part of fun for railway geeks ^^
Please note that only sruff can operate the device and customers just can watch it lol

With turning the handle, the cloth rolls up or down and you can choose your favorite one. Depending your feeling, you can choose a station, Express train, out-of-service, or another if you can read Chinese characters.
There is another version,
SHM-02 Manual Front Rollsign Series 113 Tokaido/Sanyo Line (Keihanshin Area). Just keep turning the handle until you are tired of doing it lol
