-In order to respond to increasing cargo demand, the D50 (initially 9900) was developed as a more powerful locomotive than the largest 9600 at that time, and was popularly known as Degomaru. This Unit 140 is currently stored statically in the Kyoto Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum.

-In order to meet the increasing demand for cargo, the D50 type, which was more powerful than the 9600 type at the time, was planned. 380 cars were manufactured from Taisho 12 to Showa 6 and were originally called 9900 type. The axle arrangement is the first Japanese-made [Mikado-shaped] 1D1, which was nicknamed “Degomaru” and was used throughout the country except Shikoku. Some were remodeled to the D60 type, which can be used on local lines by adding slave cars.
-No. 140 was born as No. 191993 in Taisho 15 and was active on the Chikuho Main Line in Kyushu until 1971, and is still kept in the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum.
