──New set that makes it easy to build 2-car and 3-car formations

- The 101 series is a pioneer of new high-performance national electric appliances that was produced as a prototype in 1957 and mass-produced the following year.
- Equipped with a more sophisticated body of the 72 series 920 series and a Cardan-driven DT21 bogie, this train that adopted the MM unit was initially called the Moha 90 series, and in 1959 (Showa 34) the title was revised to the 101 series. It has been changed.
- It debuted in orange on the Chuo Line Rapid Service and was subsequently introduced to commuter lines in Tokyo and Osaka.
- There were also some 800 series with a low roof for the pantograph part for the Chuo East Line.
- Additionally, some vehicles later received cooling modifications.
