- Express [Towada] is a train that connected Ueno and Aomori via the Joban Line from the 1950s to the 1980s.
- The train is operated with a lineup consisting mainly of old-style passenger cars and 10-series passenger cars.
- In addition to regular seat cars, there was a wide variety of configurations such as A sleeper, B sleeper, green car, and dining car, and at its peak the train became a popular train, operating seven round trips a day.
- Since the 1970s, it has been used in 20 series sleeping cars, 12 series passenger cars, and 14 series passenger cars, but its history ended with the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen Ueno extension in 1985.
