- The 13th SS Armed Mountain Division [Kanjar] is a unit of the Muslim Waffen-SS that was formed in Bosnia on the Balkan Peninsula, which is home to a mixture of Catholic, Orthodox, and Muslim ethnic groups.
- The officers and non-commissioned officers were German nationals or ethnic Germans born and raised here, and the soldiers were Muslims, such as Bosniks who wore Turkish caps.
- When used in a battle to wipe out partisans in mountainous areas, it took on the appearance of a religious war against Serbs and Jews, who were members of the Orthodox Church, and left a legacy of trouble even after the war.
- The division's name, Handschar, comes from the Arabic hanjar, a crescent-shaped dagger carried by adult Muslim men, and was used on divisional insignia and lapel pins as a historical symbol of Bosnia.
- After the creation of the division began in March 1943, the number of members reached 20,000 by July.
- The uniform was a regular SS uniform, but the lapel pin had a hand holding a khanjar instead of SS runes.
- Also, considering the large number of Muslims, non-Muslim soldiers were allowed to wear hats traditional to the Middle East, while non-Muslim soldiers wore regular SS mountaineering caps.
- The division was used in several guerrilla mopping-up operations, especially when dealing with Muslim enemies, which boosted the division's morale and often led to massacres.
- On May 7, 1945, Austria surrendered to British forces, and the Muslim members of the group were handed over to the partisans led by Josip Broz Tito, and many were executed at Maeboa.
