Product Description
The special cruiser Aikoku Maru was the second ship of the Hokoku Maru-class passenger and cargo ships, built with the support of a superior shipbuilding assistance program intended for military requisition in times of emergency.
Completed as a passenger-cargo ship on August 31, 1941, it was requisitioned by the Navy the following day and converted into an auxiliary cruiser.
After the outbreak of war, it engaged in commerce raiding operations in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean along with its sister ship, the Hokoku Maru.
In 1942, the main guns were replaced from the old 15cm guns to the same Type 3 14cm guns used on light cruisers, and the armament was strengthened by adding more machine guns.
Furthermore, to deceive the enemy, thorough camouflage measures were taken, such as installing a fake canvas chimney at the rear of the original chimney.
