Product Description
The Chikugo-class destroyers were planned as regional destroyers (DEs) based on the previous Isuzu-class, and 11 ships of this class were built.
While keeping costs down for the purpose of mass deployment to regional fleets, this class of destroyer was equipped with powerful anti-submarine armament, including ASROC anti-submarine missiles, low-frequency bow sonar, and variable depth sonar (VDS), making it the smallest destroyer class equipped with ASROC.
The bridge structure is large for its class because it concentrates combat compartments such as the Combat Information Center (CIC), sonar room, and anti-submarine warfare room.
In addition, knuckles were installed on the bow and sides, similar to the larger Minegumo-class destroyers, to prevent wave spray.
The lead ship, Chikugo, entered service on July 31, 1971, and was assigned to the Sasebo District Force along with its sister ship, Mikuma. Subsequently, Chikugo was decommissioned in April 1996, and Mikuma in July 1997, with all sister ships being decommissioned by 2003.
