──There was a time like that! When the blue-painted Kiha 22 was introduced

[Actual vehicle introduction]
- Of the Kiha 20 series general-purpose diesel railcars, which had larger bodies and increased comfort, the Kiha 21 type manufactured up until 1957 for extremely cold regions such as Hokkaido and the Tohoku region had insufficient insulation performance, so an improved version, the Kiha 22 type, was introduced in 1958.
- Improvements such as an increased thickness in the body, double-glazed side windows, the installation of decks and partitions, changes to the heating system, and the use of wooden floorboards gave the car a distinctive appearance, with the front window shifted upwards and the side windows consisting of a row of small, one-step raised windows.
- The initial production of about 100 cars had the typhoon light next to the headlight, but later it was moved to the taillight.
- The paintwork was originally in the old diesel railcar livery, with beige around the windows and dark blue for the fascia and waistboards, but this look only lasted a short time, and from the cars manufactured in the fall of 1959 onwards the colour was changed to cream and vermilion, and the previous cars have also had their paintwork changed.

- Both Kiha 22-21 and Kiha 22-22 were prototypes when they were assigned to Wakkanai Locomotive Depot (Asahi Waka).
