- The JNR 51 series was a medium-distance train with three doors and semi-cross seats, which could be said to be the origin of the later 70 series train.
- They were first introduced in the Kanto region in 1936 for long-distance trains on the Chuo Line, and the following year they were also introduced on the Keihanshin local lines.
- Since this vehicle was used for local trains in the Keihanshin area for a long time after the war, it has a strong "Kansai-type" image.
- The Kumouni 81 type is a streamlined double-cab freight car manufactured for the 80 series Shonan trains.
- At the time, it was common for the same type of vehicle to be modified from an older model, so the fact that it was equipped with new bogies caused a big stir among fans.
- At the time, it was one of the longest train formations in the world (16 cars), but it was replaced by the 111 series and KuMoUni 74 series, and its last use on main lines was in the Chukyo region and Okayama region.
