[Actual vehicle introduction]
- From the end of the 1950s, the standard color for JNR's general-purpose diesel railcars was a two-tone color of Cream No. 4 + Vermilion No. 4, and from 1975 onwards, a single color of Vermilion No. 5 was adopted.
- For express diesel railcars, the combination of cream No. 4 and red No. 11 around the windows remained as the standard color for a long time, and both resulted in "similar, unchanging carriages running everywhere in the country."
- However, when the two cars, Kiha 58-56 and Kiha 40-2062, entered the Kokura Factory in 1982, they were repainted in a two-tone color scheme of cream No. 1 and blue No. 20, which surprised fans at the time.
- This design, known among fans as the "Kokura Factory Test Paint," became a hot topic and even appeared on the cover of hobby magazines at the time.
- These two cars, which could be said to be the forerunners of original designs, were eventually reverted to their respective standard colors around 1984, but from the late 1980s onwards, original designs rooted in each region began to spread across the country.
