[Actual vehicle guide]
- The EF81-450 series is an AC/DC electric locomotive that was introduced in 1991 to increase the number of freight trains passing through the Kanmon Tunnel.
- The 451 and 452 units manufactured in 1991 were square-shaped with the lights in an integrated case, but the 453 to 455 units manufactured in 1992 were similar to the conventional EF81 type.
- The headlights have been changed to be placed at the top of the front.
- In addition to freight trains, it also played an active role in pulling passenger trains such as the Sakura and Naha trains at certain times.
- In 2007, the EH500 series began operating in the Kanmon Tunnel section, and after handing over their duties to the EH500 series, the EF81 series moved to freight trains within Kyushu along with the EF81 series 300s, 400s, and 500s, but they are being replaced by the EF510 series 300s.
