[Actual vehicle introduction]
- The development of electric locomotives in Japan reached its peak before the war with the worldwide boom in streamlining in the 1930s. In addition to improvements in functionality and reliability, locomotives with distinctive external features such as fully welded bodies appeared.
- The fully streamlined EF55 is the most famous, but because its structure required one end to be fixed, it was difficult to use in normal operation. The EF56, which appeared in 1937, was improved to allow for standard handling while maintaining its elegant design.
- It was also the first electric locomotive to be fitted with a steam heating system for passengers, eliminating the need to attach a heating car in winter.
- The design of the additional EF56 cars was changed to a more angular body shape for mass production, but the body structure mainly based on welding was adopted by the later EF57 and was later refined into the postwar EF58.
- This product is a shorty model inspired by the locomotives of the generation when this rounded design was popular.
- Even after being rejected by the Japanese National Railways, similar designs were often seen on medium-sized electric locomotives for private railways manufactured by major electric manufacturers after the war, and were popular throughout the country.
