Product Description

- Macoma is one of nine Royal Dutch Shell oil tankers converted into merchant aircraft carriers (MAC ships).
- This group is collectively known as the Rapana class.
- Macoma was launched as an oil tanker on 31 December 1935 at Nederlands Scheepsboug Mai in Amsterdam, and commissioned the following year.
- Converted into a MAC ship between late 1943 and April 1944, and commissioned on 1 April 1944.
- As a MAC ship, it had no aircraft hangars and operated under the control of the Royal Navy, but continued to carry normal cargo.
- Only the air crew and air support staff were Navy personnel.
- In the case of Macoma, these were provided by the Royal Netherlands Navy, including No. 860 and No. 861 Squadrons of the Dutch Fleet Air Arm.
- Macoma and her sister ship Gadira were the first aircraft-carrying ships with a flight deck to operate under the Dutch flag.
- After the war, Macoma was refitted and returned to merchant service as an oil tanker, serving in that role until she was scrapped in Hong Kong in 1959.
